Happy birthday in Thai: what to write and when

A birthday message is the easiest good message there is. It needs no reason, it asks nothing, and a few words of Thai in it show you made an effort. This guide gives you those words, a little of the culture around Thai birthdays, and the one thing men most often get wrong: the timing.
Happy birthday in Thai
The standard greeting is:
- Suk san wan koet (สุขสันต์วันเกิด): happy birthday. You will also see it romanised as "suk san wan gerd".
Add the polite ending and it is warmer. Remember ka is for women and krub for men, so from you: suk san wan koet krub. Add na for a softer, fonder tone: suk san wan koet na krub.
In texts, a lot of Thai people also just write HBD, which needs no translation at all.
The wishes that go with it
Thai birthday messages usually add a wish or two, and they follow a pattern: happiness, health, and good things in the year ahead. Some you can use:
- Kor hai mee kwam suk mak mak (ขอให้มีความสุขมากๆ): wishing you lots of happiness.
- Kor hai suk kha phap khaeng raeng (ขอให้สุขภาพแข็งแรง): wishing you good health.
- Kor hai som wang tuk yang (ขอให้สมหวังทุกอย่าง): may everything you hope for come true.
"Kor hai" means "may you" or "I wish you", and you can put your own wish after it in your own language. Even one of these, in Thai, next to a message in your own words, is a lovely thing to receive.
Her colour
In Thailand every day of the week has a colour, and many people know which day they were born on and treat its colour as theirs:

If you know her birth date, you can work out the day. Mentioning her colour, or sending flowers or a picture in it, is a small detail that shows you know something about where she is from.
How Thai people spend a birthday
Birthdays in Thailand are often simple. Many people start the day quietly, with family, and some begin it by making merit, a small act of giving that is a sincere tradition for a lot of Thai families. Later there may be food with friends or workmates, a cake, and plenty of photos. If she works in a Pattaya bar, her colleagues may well celebrate with her at work that night.
What matters to most people is being remembered, not the size of the gesture.
Her age, and the Thai year
Thailand counts years on the Buddhist calendar, which is 543 years ahead of the Western one. The year 2026 is 2569 in Thailand. If she ever gives you a birth year that looks impossible, subtract 543. You do not need to mention her age at all, and most of the time it is better not to.
Timing it right
Her birthday starts at midnight Thai time (UTC+7), which is not midnight where you are. From the UK, it begins at 5pm the day before in winter, or 6pm in summer. From central Europe, 6pm or 7pm the day before. From the US East Coast, noon or 1pm the day before. From eastern Australia, 3am or 4am on the day itself.
Two good moments to send it:
- When she wakes, around late morning Thai time, so it is waiting on her phone.
- In her afternoon, roughly 1pm to 6pm Thai time, before she goes to work.
From Europe or the Americas, sending it in your evening on the date itself means it arrives the day after, which is the one mistake to avoid. The time difference guide has the table for your city.
Knowing when it is
On this site a woman can add her birthday to her page if she wants to, as a day and month. On the day, her card shows a birthday cake and a Say happy birthday button, her conversation says it is her birthday today, and Discover can show you everyone whose birthday it is. If you have written to her recently, you also get one email on the day to remind you. No push notification, and nothing more than that.
A message that works
"Suk san wan koet na krub, Ploy! I hope your day is full of good food and good people. Kor hai mee kwam suk mak mak. I will be thinking of you from rainy London."
Short, warm, one wish in Thai, a line about you, and nothing she has to answer today. If you want to add something more, you can buy her a real soft drink on her bar's till from wherever you are.
What to leave out
- Jokes about her age. They do not translate and they do not land.
- Anything about money in either direction. A birthday wish that mentions money stops being a birthday wish.
- Pressure to reply. It is her day. She will answer when she has a moment, possibly the next afternoon.
